Melting point determination remains one of the simplest and most rapid purity indicators available for a crystalline solid compound, exploiting the principle that the presence of even a small proportion of a structurally different impurity characteristically depresses and broadens the observed melting range relative to that of the pure compound. A sharp melting point, typically spanning no more than one to two degrees Celsius and closely matching the literature or previously established value for the compound, provides a rapid preliminary indication of both compound identity and purity; a depressed or broadened melting range, by contrast, signals the likely presence of an impurity and prompts further chromatographic purity investigation, making melting point determination a valuable, low-cost first-line quality check performed routinely alongside the more definitive analytical methods described throughout this phase.
